Reef Fuel Injection Services (RFI), a subsidiary of diesel engine and component remanufacturer Metric Automotive Engineering, has become the first South African diesel service centre able to offer the local market a comprehensive Stage 3 injector repair service. This benchmark repair effectively restores the diesel injectors back to a zero hour rebuild.
“The harsh operating conditions in Africa, coupled with poor quality diesel fuel, exact a severe toll on diesel injectors, which run at high levels with tight tolerances,” Warren Hauser, RFI workshop manager, says. “Regular repair and remanufacture of these injectors is critical to sustain companies’ investments in these costly vehicles.
“Based on the specialised training our team has undergone at Bosch South Africa and building on our Stage 1 and Stage 2 experience and capabilities, we have developed an all-inclusive Stage 3 repair system that covers nozzle and valve assembly, as well as electronic recalibration of injectors with specific shims, using only a digital torque wrench and digital gauges.”
Hauser says the remanufacture of used injectors back to zero hour status renders them the equivalent of new injectors and in no way compromises quality. Electronic calibration takes place during assembly, followed by dynamic calibration on a Bosch test bench with electronic flow meters that RFI has specially imported from Germany. Customers receive a calibration certificate to verify the process.
To support its Stage 3 offering, RFI has made a significant investment in a hi-tech pressure controlled clean room to house the new equipment.
“We are not offering customers a stop-gap type of repair,” Hauser says. “This is a complete remanufacture of the injectors, which form the heart of the engine, affecting performance, fuel consumption and the ultimate life of the unit.
“Cheap partial injector repairs might save companies some money in the short term, but an investment in their complete remanufacture guarantees a measurable saving in the longer term. We are actually recommending that Stage 3 repairs should form part of the preventive maintenance schedule, long before the engine is brought in for a complete overhaul.”
Today RFI is one of the few Bosch-appointed EDC (electronic diesel control) service centres in South Africa and holds more accreditations than any other company. As an authorised service agent to all five leading diesel fuel injection systems – Bosch, Caterpillar, Zexel, Delphi, Denso and Stanadyne – the company repairs, overhauls and calibrates all makes of diesel injectors and injector pumps and specialises in common rail injectors and fuel pumps. It is the acknowledged market leader in CAT diesel injection systems, with services that cover all fuel injection componentry, from a single cylinder to multi-cylinder conventional and electronic components.
“We operate one of the best equipped service, diagnostic and repair facilities in the country, using only OEM equipment and genuine parts,” Hauser says. “We invest in both technology and equipment on an ongoing basis, as well as technician training. All our test equipment is checked and maintained to SABS 0166 and ISO 9002 standards.
“Top of mind at all times is minimising downtime for our customers through fast and efficient turnaround and accurate feedback. Our facility is custom built to ensure that workflow processes optimise the movement of components. We operate a rapid local collection and delivery service which further speeds up the process.”
